Josquin Des Prez (1440-1521) O Iesu Fili David

[Hawkins Volume I, Chapter LXXII, p. 336-8 (from Glareanus:1547)]

"Glareanus is lavish in his commendation and has given the following account of him: 'Iodocus Pratensis, or Jusquin de Prez, was the principal of the musicians of his time, and possessed of a degree of wit and ingenuity scarce ever before heard of....'"

No lavishness of commendation could ever suffice. It is therefore as impertinent to praise Josquin as to praise God or Beethoven. Tacite et audite! "Shut up and just listen!"

"O Iesu fili David, / miserere mei! / Filia mea / male a daemonio vexatur / nam et catelli edunt / de micis quae cadunt de mensa dominorum suorum" / "O mulier, magna est fides tua." [Matthew 15:22/27/28] "O Jesus son of David, have pity on me. / My daughter / is possessed by a devil ... / for even the dogs may eat / of the scraps that fall from their masters' table." / "O woman, great is your faith."

It appears that this was really a secular work, a chanson Comment peulx haver joye....
